Orthographic Mapping Worksheets

Are you looking for an effective way to teach your students orthographic mapping systematically? You’ll want to look at these NO PREP word mapping phonics worksheets! They will allow students to read phonics-based words and orthographically map phonemes fluently. This includes word lists along with phoneme-grapheme mapping worksheets. I created this activity during my phonics word recognition lesson plan that aligns with the Science of Reading. This resource will allow students to connect speech sounds (phonemes) to the letters (graphemes). All word lists and sound/letter mapping worksheets have real and nonsense words (each list has 10-20 words).

Why Real AND Nonsense Words

  • Real and nonsense words are used to help teach key phonetic sounds.

  • Nonsense words can be used to teach syllabication effectively.

  • Practicing with nonsense words improves a student’s ability to ‘attack’ unknown or unfamiliar words in text.

How to Use this Resource:

  • Read it: Students will read the word lists.

  • Say it: Students will read the word provided from the list.

  • “Tap it”- Tap out each sound you hear in the word with your fingers (i.e., shed - /sh/-/e/-/d/)

  • “Map it”- Map out each sound-

    • Level 1- using the sound boxes, students will push sound chips for each sound they hear. (i.e. 1 chip for /sh/, 1 chip for /e/, 1 chip for /d/)

    • Level 2- say and write each sound you hear in the given sound box. (i.e. say /sh/ and write a sh in the beginning consonants boxes, say /e/ and write e in the vowel box, and say /d/ and write d in the final consonant sound boxes)

  • “Zap it”- Blend the word and read the word.

    • Spell and write out the word they sounded out (i.e. shed)

    • Read the word the fast way. (i.e. shed)

  • Repeat for all words

  • When done, read all finished words.
