When should I Use these Phonics Assessments?
1. Identify which phonics intervention your students need.
I always administer this at the beginning of every school year. Once my students are identified as needing Tier 2 phonics intervention, I use this to place my students in groups. I can tell exactly which phonics skills my students have mastered and which skills they need to work on.
2. Pre and Post-Phonics Intervention Assessments
These phonics assessments are an excellent resource for baseline data on phonics interventions. I give a pre-assessment before instruction and a post-assessment to see how they retained the phonics skills.
3. Phonics Quick Checks for Progress Monitoring Throughout Your Phonics Instruction.
Use these as a progress monitoring tool during your phonics intervention. I assess my students' progress weekly. The information I gather guides my instruction and tells me exactly what my students are learning.
The skills included in this phonics assessment are:
Unit 12: Prefixes and Suffixes

During Phonics Assessments
Students Can use a piece of paper to cover the words, so they only read one line at a time. Using this technique will lower confusion by seeing too much on the page at one time and keeps their eyes on the words they need to read.
Administrators Can use your recording sheet to record the students’ correct and incorrect answers and date them when they have mastered them. I recommend using a different color pen for each date you assess, so it’s easy to spot when learners have mastered the skills.
