Making Sight Words Easier Through Phonics - Endless Heart Word Worksheets

Sight Word Worksheets

Traditional sight word instruction has been shown to not be effective for students who are struggling with reading. Despite this, many teachers still rely on memorization of sight words as a key part of their reading instruction. Instead, we should be teaching our students high-frequency words using phonics skills and then practice sight words by having our students learn the “tricky parts” of irregular words by heart. That is why I created the Endless Heart Word Worksheets! These Science of Reading aligned worksheets will help your students improve their reading fluency without the need for extra prep work or rote memorization.

What Are Sight Words?

Sight words are high-frequency words that are used often in everyday conversations and written texts. They usually cannot be sounded out using phonics skills so they must be learned by sight or memory alone. Sight words generally make up 50-75% of any text, so it is important for students to learn them quickly and accurately in order to read fluently and with comprehension.

Why Use These Sight Word Worksheets?

The Endless Heart Word Worksheets have been designed based on Science of Reading principles and are intended to help students learn high-frequency sight words more easily. Rather than having them memorize the entire word, these worksheets focus on teaching them the “tricky part” – usually one or two letters – then using phonics skills for the rest of the word. This helps reduce student frustration as they don’t need to remember as much information and makes it easier for them to read fluently with comprehension. Additionally, since these worksheets are NO PREP resources, you can easily integrate them into your existing curriculum without needing extra time or materials!

Why Teach Sight Words by Phonics Skills

Dolch and Fry were sorted by the frequency of words appearing in text. The problem is that these high-frequency words are often taught with other words that follow completely different phonics rules. Instead of teaching sight words by frequency, I have sorted them by phonics skills. Then students can master one spelling rule at a time!
